About NUCCA Print E-mail

There are many Chiropractic facilities throughout the Greenville-Simpsonville area, but at Franz Family Spinal Care, we offer a different approach....NUCCA chiropractic care. NUCCA stands for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. The NUCCA procedure is based on measurement and observation. All corrections are based on objective evidence. By using measurements on pre and post x-rays and the spinal analysis machine we are able to know whether or not your spine has been corrected to a normally aligned position.

NUCCA is NOT....
In chiropractic there are over 250 different procedures available to doctors who take care of the spine. With NUCCA there is NONE of the twisting, turning, popping, or cracking that patients may be used to, or have heard about when other chiropractic methods have been implemented.  It is not necessary to adjust the spine if and when the spine is truly aligned properly and is in a stable state.

NUCCA IS....

The only time a correction (adjustment) needs to be performed is when the spine is misaligned. Therefore with NUCCA, fewer corrections mean fewer office visits.

The NUCCA procedure is designed to effectively correct the spinal misalignment.  With precise x-rays, the doctor is able to determine the spinal misalignment (Atlas Subluxation Complex Syndrome) and know how to correct it.

Individual experience will vary depending on the degree and severity of your spinal misalignment.

    • What is the NUCCA procedure?
        1. Health History:  A detailed health history is taken on every patient. This will help to determine if the problem or symptoms that the patient is having is related to a spinal misalignment.
        2. Leg Check:  After a history has been taken, a leg check is performed to evaluate if there is a short leg phenomena. While the patient is lying on their back (Supine), the patient’s legs are compared. The short leg phenomenon occurs due to the muscles contracting on one side of the spine more then on the other. Any deviation or short leg of more than 1/4 of an inch has been found to indicate a spinal misalignment.
        3. Postural Analysis:   Spinal Analysis Machine (S.A.M.) is used to confirm the presence of a spinal misalignment. When a short leg is present you may notice that one of the hips or shoulders are higher/lower than the other. The body may be leaning to the left or right. There may also be a tilting of the head to left or right. All of these changes in a patient’s posture are referred to as postural distortion.  All of these measurements are taken on the S.A.M.
        4. Pre (before) X-rays:  If the leg check, postural analysis, and the history indicate the presence of a spinal misalignment, then very precise pre x-rays are taken. Three x-rays are then taken of the upper neck. This gives a 3-D picture of the head and neck and the misalignment can be precisely measured.
        5.  X-ray Analysis:  The x-rays are then analyzed using specific templates. Once analysis is complete, a vectored formula is calculated that will be used to make the correction.
        6. Correction (adjustment):   A correction is given based off of what the pre x-rays showed. The patient will lie on either their right or left side with their head supported on a headpiece. The doctor's body is positioned in line with the calculated vector taken off of the pre x-rays to make the specific correction. Each misalignment is unique to each individual, like a finger-print.
        7. Post Leg Check/Postural Analysis:   Post correction measurements are taken. When the spine has been corrected back to a normal position, the legs will become even and the body posture will have returned to normal.
        8. Post X-rays:  Following the initial correction post x-rays are taken immediately to determine the effectiveness of the correction. Post x-rays allow the doctor to measure the position of the structures and to determine if the spine has been corrected back to its normal position.
        9. Resting Time:  Following the correction the patient is taken to the resting room for a short time to relax. This resting period allows the body to accept the correction and provides more stability.
